When you were young everything was so exciting. The thought of growing up and becoming an adult, driving a car, buying a house and even having your own kids. We all have timelines in our heads, but how often do we meet those timelines? Sometimes it is out of our control, but other times we fail to think about the future.
Live in the now, don’t worry about the future, heck YOLO right? But, what if I told you that by thinking of the future you would have less stress, less headache now then in the days to come. If you haven’t gotten the hint I am referring to retirement.
I hear it so often. I will wait until I make more money. I will wait until I am older. I will wait until the kids are out of the house, are out of college and the list goes on and on. Why not plan now? Ah right, because you don’t feel the need. You can’t understand that when 50 somethings come to talk to me they wished they all say the same thing; I wish I would have started earlier.
Instant gratification. I am guilty of this as well. Wanting everything now, rather than waiting. We can’t see the future but we can prepare for it.
The first step is thinking about your future. Check your retirement accounts your 401ks, are you on track to retire the age you desire? Are you planning to buy a house, a new car, how much do those things cost to save now so you can have them when you want them?
If you never thought about this or it’s hard for you to think about these things, then find someone to help you envision the future and plan for what may be ahead.
Someone once told me, showing up is half the batttle, but I would argue planning to show up is the war!
Plan now so you don’t have to later.
